Instruments For Sale

I have expanded the selection of ukuleles for sale beyond DaSilva Ukulele Co.  models.  As the workshop has grown to become a central ukulele gathering spot in the San Francisco Bay Area,  I have an opportunity to provide high-quality vintage and new ukuleles for sale.

If you see an instrument you are interested in, just contact me for more info or to arrange purchase or trial.

For DaSilva Ukulele Co. models,  if you would like something changed on a ukulele, I can make minor modifications.   Since all my instruments are essentially built to order,  I can also build a stock model to your specs with little or no increase in price.

I've included sound clips of the instruments as I find time to record them.  Clips are digitally recorded using a Rode NTK tube mic and an Acoustic Research and Technology MPA Gold tube pre-amp and a Firepod digital interface.  Need to see or hear more?   Additional photos and sound samples for specific instruments are available.   Just ask.

#160 - Soprano Custom

The tight grain and light weight of the cedar top gives this ukulele an amazingly clear and strong tone.  I tried to accent the yellow color of the cedar and the underlying shades in the macadamia with the yellow heart binding, purfling and hand-made rope rosette.

SOLD    #144- Tenor Custom   SOLD

Click for Fullsize (1024x768) or Huge (2048x1536) image

Most instruments I build are to fulfill custom orders, but quite often, happening upon a piece of wood will inspire me to develop an instrument around the wood.  The yellow tints in this piece of mango led me to use yellow heart as an accent color in the purfling, perfectly framing the incredibly curly grain in the matching top and back.

This tenor instrument has a bright tone and good volume .   It should be well suited to both strumming and finger-picking styles.

Sound Clip #1

This instrument is the first in a series of fish decorated concert ukuleles.   While the instrument is definitely whimsical, the sound and playability of this instrument is not.  Topped with old-growth vertical grain fir with a body of primavera ("white mahogany") this ukulele is loud, clear, balanced and responsive.  Many folks had opportunity to play it at the festival, and I feel it safe to say that everyone was pleasantly surprised.  It is hard to see from the photos, but the tail is carved and tapered to mimic a real fish tail.   With Peghed tuners, extended fingerboard and same careful construction that goes into all my instruments, this was built to be a serious player.  The artwork was wonderfully executed by Elizabeth Newton in acrylic with a tough lacquer  overcoat.  I look forward to more examples of her sense of color and ability to make the images come alive.

This is the first time I have used either Alaskan yellow cedar or macadamia in a ukulele.  The tight grain and light weight of the cedar top gives this ukulele an amazingly clear and strong tone.  I tried to accent the yellow color of the cedar and the underlying shades in the macadamia with the bloodwood and yellow heart binding, purfling and hand-made rope rosette.

Al Dodge, of Cheap Suit Serenaders renown, is also an excellent ukulele builder.  This is a fine example of his craftsmanship and sense of instrument design.  The spruce top and mahogany body combination deliver a clean, pure and loud tone.  Simple, but looks great and plays well.

SOLD  Soprano Y'Ke Ke  SOLD
vintage, refurbished

Click for Fullsize (1024x768) or Huge (2048x1536) image

This is an all koa example of a Y'Ke Ke brand ukulele from the 1920's sold by Jules M. Sahlein of San Francisco, manufactured by  Echo Ukes.   "Echo Uke" was a brand name of the Hawaiian Mahogany Company, a Honolulu ukulele manufacturer in the 1920s.

This ukulele has been professionally refurbished.  There are no cracks.  Minor edge lifting on the top was reglued.   Fingerboard and frets were leveled and reconditioned.    Bridge was removed, refitted and reglued.  New wooden nut and hand-turned friction pegs matching originals were constructed and installed.  This uke is very playable with a classic Hawaiian sound.

SOLD   #A006 - 1890 Santo Reproduction

Click for Fullsize (1024x768) or Huge (2048x1536) image

This instrument was recently shown at the "Ukulele and You" exhibit at the Musuem of Making Music in Carlsbad, California.   It is a dimensional copy of an original ca. 1890 Espirito dos Santo ukulele that I am fortunate enough to have access to.  The decoration is inspired by photos of a highly decorated model passed on to me by John King.    Of particular note is the 4-color rope binding.  It is made up of 4 different woods and if you look carefully, the pattern of colors does not repeat, therefore adding to the illusion of actual cordage.

As with all of the Santo and Dias reproductions I have built to date, the volume and tone of these instruments always pleasantly surprises everyone who plays.  It is no wonder that the world fell in love with the music provided by these instruments.  Watch the video below to hear what virtuoso John King was able to do with a similar reproduction.
